[Gate-users] Is this simulation executable?

Hi Seokyoon,

I haven't worked much with optical photons in GATE, but you are definitely
going to need to use the optical photon generation/tracking. The start of
the guide is available at
http://wiki.opengatecollaboration.org/index.php/Users_Guide:Generating_and_tracking_optical_photons
.

Thinking about it briefly, here are a few challenges you will likely run
into:

-Dealing with photon transmission at the scintillator/air interface; it's
hard enough when the scintillator is sitting directly on the photodetector,
and I don't know if the photon transport code has been verified over such a
large distance.

-Finding out whether your optical photons are being transported properly;
given how far away your detector is from your scintillator, the vast bulk
of the optical photons you generate will likely not hit the detector unless
it has a very large surface area.

I am wondering if there is an error in your description of the experimental
setup. Do you mean that the x-ray source is 100 cm away from the
scintillator, which is coupled to the CCD? That would better match x-ray
imaging systems that I have worked with.

I hope these thoughts help you get started on this admittedly unusual
project!

Best regards,

-Bryan
