Dear SeungEun Lee

I have an experience in the simulation of Cerenkov photons with GATEv6.2 for optical imaging application.

The number of Cerenkov photons with different positron energies could be simulated successfully (See the attached files slide#39-47)

Here is the optical physics processes that I used for the Cerenkov imaging simulation.

/gate/physics/addProcess OpticalMie
/gate/physics/addProcess OpticalWLS

/gate/physics/processList Enabled
/gate/physics/processList Initialized

In my opinion, the kinetic energy of a photo-electron produced by a 511 keV gamma photon should be larger than 280 keV.

This is because, the Cerenkov light yield is heavily dependent on the positron(or electron) energy (slide#46-47).

Could you let me know the version of GATE and Geant4?

I would like to know the optical simulation parameters contained in Materials.xml.
-Refractive index of BGO material (RINDEX)
-Absorption length of the BGO(ABSLength)

Also I would like to know the quantum efficiency of your detector as a function of optical photon energy which is contained in Surfaces.xml.
As you know the number of Cerenkov photons is inversely proportional to the wavelength.(slide#43)

What type of scanner do you use? (ex> scanner, OpticalSystem)

Hopefully, my optical simulation results could help your Cerenkov simulation.

Best regards,

Han Gyu Kang, PhD student

Eulji University, South Korea.

Dear Gate users,

I'm looking forward to observe Cerenkov effects in BGO crystal with 511 keV
gamma ray irradiated. I added Cerenkov to the physics list.

However, the most important thing is, that there are too small number of
Cerenkov events (3 per 100Mevents). It is known that more than 10 Cerenkov
photon photon emitted per 511 keV gamma ray and also it is shown in many
GEANT4 works previously.

Also I wanted to see the Cerenkov photons' origins of generation. I mean
which ID and which physical process (photoelectric or Compton) generated
this Cerenkov photon. But there are only 'Cerenkov' events written in Hits
file. ID of generation is just said to be electron.

Did anyone simulate Cerenkov effects in GATE successfully? Is there any tip
to solve this?

Thanks a lot.
Seungeun Lee.
