Hello Tony,
I had the same problem with phase spaces coming from IAEA due to these negative IDs, among other things. You can use ROOT format instead of IAEAphsp, which is more compatible with Gate.

Objet : [Gate-users] error reading particle type
Dear GATE users,
I'm running gate for external radiotherapy applications for high energy photon beams. I recently tried to create a new IAEAphsp file after the jaws of a simulated Linac in order to reduce computation time. When I try to run a new simulation with the created phase space file, I get the following error multiple times at the end of each simulation:
ERROR: read_particle: Failed to read particle type
ERROR: read_particle: Failed to read particle type
ERROR: read_particle: Failed to read particle type
...
As i understand that a photon ID is represented by the number 1. When I tried to read the IAEAphsp file, which contains ID, energy, position and direction of each particle, i recognized that some particles have the ID -1. In the header file the -1 and 1 are considered as a photon as I realized. I can't find why I'm getting the negative sign and I'm not sure if the error is related to the sign, has anyone encountered this problem before?
I would really appreciate any help or advise,
Best Regards,
Tony
