Hi Smita,
One may face an fid of '-1' if MATLAB could not read that file.
In your case, put the '.sin' file in current directory of MATLAB. Meanwhile, extension of your file should be '.sin', re-check the extension. In order to use fopen command, you MUST specify full name of the file (i.e., plus its extension), for example, fopen ('gate.sin', 'r').
MATLAB is a powerful and robust tool in both analytic and iterative reconstructions. You can also benefit from an open-source code, STIR 3.0 (the newest version), to reconstruct the image (in STIR 3.0, SPECT capabilities are added).
