[Gate-users] GATE without ROOT

Hello all,

Some of my Manchester University colleagues have been fortunate enough
to get some computing time on Blue Joule - the UK's largest
supercomputer - and they are planning to run GATE simulations of proton
and photon radiotherapy plans. Previously, we've been using a small
cluster and have been using GATE for 18 months or so. The intention now
is to get some high accuracy dose statistics for organs at risk that are
far from the treatment volume.

However, we are having some problems getting GATE compiled on this
supercomputer. It is an IBM BlueGene/Q system which has compute nodes
which use 64-bit PowerPC processors. According to various messageboards,
ROOT cannot work on PowerPC architectures. So, I'm wondering, has
anybody had any experience compiling GATE without ROOT? Is this even
possible? Can we get away with using inputs and outputs which aren't in
ROOT format?

Would appreciate any help. Many thanks,

Chris
