Hi,

yes, graphics can work quite differently under different operating systems
and virtual machines rely on the basic system.
On your basic Linux system, not the one from your virtual machine, you could test
the graphics libraries also with: (type this in your console/terminal)
which glxgears
the answer should be where this program is located and could look like:
/usr/X11/bin/glxgears
In case glxgears exists you could then type:
/usr/X11/bin/glxgears
and a window should open with three cog wheels turning.
Also, you could type 
glxinfo or glxinfo | more
which give a lot of infos about the graphics installed.

If this fails, then something more basic is missing, which could well be the path
to libraries, etc. Then you better talk to an expert ...
