Your statement "I believe having the setEllipseRotationNorm function as positive means that the beam is convergent" is correct.
You can also check the documentation of the Pencil Beam and TPS sources here<https://opengate.readthedocs.io/en/latest/source_and_particle_management.html#pencil-beam-source> in more details.
For more practical testing on the source, you can also use this "example/tutorial<https://github.com/OpenGATE/GateContrib/tree/master/GATE-RTion/TPSPencilBeamSource>".
I would advise you to set-up a few Phase Space files after the source start in the world, let say right after it and also 20 and 40 or 60 cm further away, to check your beam properties and make sure the beam is converging/diverging the way you set it, with the set energy and energy spread (see example/tutorial above).

The PencilBeamTools you are using are a bit outdated, but if it still works that is great!
The new trend would be to migrate to Python Tools from GateTools<https://github.com/OpenGATE/GateTools>. We did not redevelop the PencilBeamTools though, but that may be a nice contribution in future!
