Hello again,
I think that for your application you should probably try Geant4, because, as the user guide states:
"In contrast with Geant4, Gate does not use isotopic abundances. This omission has little bearing on Gate applications because isotopic abundances are unimportant in low to mid energy photon and charged particle interactions. In fact, this distinction is only important for enriched or depleted materials interacting with neutrons or, high energy (>5 MeV) photons or charged particles."
...Or, you could modify some classes of GATE to be able and run such simulation.

Hello Konstantinos,
Thank you!
To test this, I have tried simulating a proton beam in a phantom made only from Heavyoxygen (Z=8, A=18 g/mole).
I do not expect any 16-O in this phantom. However, from the simulation output, it seems that there are "protonInelastic" events occurring between protons and 16-O.
Is it possible that GATE sees Heavyoxygen, only recognizes a Z=8 element and simulates events for all its isotopes according to their abundances?
If it is pertinent, I am using physics list QGSP_BIC_HP.

Hello again,
Your definition is correct and Heavyoxygen corresponds to 18-O. Good job.!

Thank you Konstantinos,
Could you help advise if GATE allows me to define a material containing a specific isotope of an element (e.g. 18-O). I am trying to simulate interactions of a proton beam in 18-O enriched water.
I have tried to define a new element 'Heavyoxygen' (S = Oh) with Z = 8., A = 17.999 g/mole, and a new material Heavywater composed of H and Oh in GateMaterials.db. My concern is if GATE recognizes Oh as 18-O and knows to use the associated cross-sections for interactions with e.g. protons.
Please advise.
Thank you!Apsara

Thank you, Konstantinos,
Sorry, to clarify, I am trying to define 18-O enriched water in GATE. Does GATE allow one to define an isotope of an element (e.g. 18-O) - and hence 18-O water - in GateMaterials.db, and have e.g. protons interacting with it using the relevant reaction cross-sections for 18-O?
Thank you!

Hello Apsara,
What exactly do you mean by enriched materials?? You can insert any kind of material in GateMaterials.db.

Dear GATE users,
Is it possible to define enriched materials in GATE? I would like to simulate a proton beam in e.g. 50% 18-O enriched water, and score proton-induced activation, to attempt to replicate the TOPAS simulations in this work:

Thank you!
