[Gate-users] Run Gate example - novice question

Hi Deborah,

Welcome to Gate and the gate-users mailing list!

I had a quick look at David Sarrut's exercise website, and I see that it says to run not just "Gate", but "Gate mac/ex1.mac". You *can* of course run first just "Gate", and then "/control/execute mac/ex1.mac", but that is more typing.

The tricky thing when doing this is that you should *not* be in the "exercises/mac" directory (where ex1.mac is, like you write), but in its parent directory, in "exercises". We have kind of a convention in Gate to organize our macros and other data in a work directory ("exercises" in this case) that has three subfolders named "mac", "data" and "output", for macro files, input data (images, files with calibration data, etc) and results, respectively. Usually in commands like "/control/execute <filename>" we specify the macro filename with the assumption that you will execute Gate in the work directory, not in mac. Therefore the mac file with verbosity settings is given as "mac/verbose.mac" instead of just "verbose.mac". I've seen many beginning users being confused by this, but you'll get used to it. (And maybe we could emphasize this feature a bit more in the tutorials...) 😊

I hope that this helps and I wish you good luck with the rest of the exercises. Don't hesitate to ask more questions to this mailing list!

/David B. (not S.!)

Betreff: [Gate-users] Run Gate example - novice question

Dear Gate users,

I am totally a novice in the use of Gate, so sorry for this question.
I have made the installation of vGate 9.0 with virtual box. I would like to try to run a macro example (gate/gate-exercices/exercices/mac)

I have read the user's guide and this website ( https://davidsarrut.pages.in2p3.fr/gate-exercices-site/docs/exercice1/ ).

After type "Gate" in the terminal", it says that the command for running is :
/control/execute ex1.mac

I have two kinds of error :
- the first said : ERROR: Can not open a macro file <mac/verbose.mac>. Set macro path with "/control/macroPath" if needed.
[Gate] Sorry, error in a macro command : abort.
- the second said : bash : /control/execute: No such file or directory.

In both cases, I was in the good folder where ex1.mac is situated.

I also tried directly : ex1.mac, but this does not work.

Any ideas to solve my problem ? Thank you in advance for your help

Deborah D.
