If you specifically need to depend on an older version, you could in
fact install manually. But you could also have a locally modified
Portfile to get the changes you need.

This problem surfaced once MacPorts needed to install Qt4 and Qt5
side-by-side, but it needs to be fixed, I consider it to be a bug:

I would have to test what exactly is needed to work around the
problem, but that's off-topic for this list. (If you need to ask, you
could ask on one of the MacPorts mailing lists or on their IRC
channel.)

<your-favourite-text-editor> ~/.bash_profile
You can also launch the editor with "open -a NameOfApp filename".
