Hi Cindy,
 
The root file has a default size of 2 GB or so and when it reaches that
size, another file is automatically opened and the output is written
into that file. I think you can merge all the root output files from a
simulation using the "hadd" command. 
With root open, you can use "TBrowser t" to open any of the root trees
and double-clicking on the leaves should help you look at the data.
