[Gate-users] help with Geant4 installation / Ubuntu ...

Hi Freddie,

first let me recommend to always send such questions to the gate-users at lists.healthgrid.org list,
as you can expect many more people to respond, once having found a similar problem.

I do noit have any experience with GEANT4 version 4.9.1.p03 but with 4.9.1.p02, and also I
use the MACOS or SuSE-Linux. I remember, however, that one of my students had a problem
with visualization on his LAPTOP operated under Ubuntu.

The problem you experienced to my understanding is related to GEANT's part of visualisation
and maybe, there are some inconsistencies with the version of Ubuntu for the geant4 version
you are using.
Since this my also be relevant for modern computer system, which can run 64Bit operating
systems, you should make sure, that all flags are set accordingly. You cannot mix programs
and libraries created with either version, as far as I have experienced.
Also, check the GATE Users guide (Version 5 is currently the latest) to find out, which
versions of root, CLHEP, .... are recommended and work smoothly.

Hello,

My name is Freddie Daver. I am a student working under Dr. Magnus Dahlbom. I have recently been trying to install Geant4 (with the hopes of later installing GATE), but have been having some trouble. Magnus gave me your email address with the hopes of resolving it.

I am attempting to install Geant4 ver 4.9.1.p03 on Ubuntu Linux ver 9.10. (Apparently Geant4 ver 4.9.2 is not compatible with the latest version of GATE.) I have previously installed ROOT and CLHEP, and OpenGL is part of the standard Ubuntu package. When using the ./Configure -build command to build the Geant4 libraries, I get the following message (after a few hours of compiling):

I have attempted to proceed with the installation despite the error message. The environmental variable configuration, etc. seems to be successful. When attempting to run the Geant4 examples, the first example (....../novice/N01) runs without any problems, but all others give me an error message indicating that:

/usr/bin/ld: cannot find -lG4visHepRep
collect2: ld returned 1 exit status

There is a thread regarding this error (http://hypernews.slac.stanford.edu/HyperNews/geant4/get/installconfig/1228.html) but the problem was not addressed. I have attempted the solution proposed by including the appropriate directories in my path, but still get the same message about "cannot find -lG4HepRep".

Please let me know what can be done (or if there are bugs to be avoided, etc.) to get things working smoothly. Thank you for your time,
