Three-year doctoral fellowship in hadrontherapy with IBA and CREATIS
We propose a PhD position in the context of cancer treatment with light 
ion beams (hadrontherapy). In the framework of the Marie Curie Initial 
Training Network PARTNER 
<http://partner.web.cern.ch/partner/Welcome.html>, funded by the EU, IBA 
<http://www.iba.be/> and CREATIS <http://www.creatis.insa-lyon.fr/> will 
host for a three-year period an early stage researcher. He/she will be 
offered to participate in active training and to prepare a PhD thesis, 
while being considered as a full member of the IBA particle therapy 
research team in Louvain-la-Neuve (Belgium). The academic supervision of 
the PhD will be carried out by a multi-disciplinary collaboration 
between CREATIS, CLB <http://oncora1.lyon.fnclcc.fr/> and CNDRI, 
currently working on the simulation tools and methodology required for 
future treatment planning.

The aim of the thesis is to design Monte Carlo simulations for computing 
dose distributions from proton/carbon irradiation inside a patient and 
to compare them to the dose distributions obtained with a 
commercially-available treatment planning system (TPS). Special 
attention will be paid to target heterogeneity and physical properties 
of particle-matter interactions, especially for carbon ions, in order to 
provide the information needed to compute the biological dose.
