i was in the same situation about 18 months ago and one of the sites which
really helped me install GATE was

this description is for a different distribution of linux to what you have
although many of the steps are common to all distros i assume.

for basic linux commands download and print to keep as a reference (i still
do!):

for a basic intro to linux tutorial check out

this was a course which at my university run in our small centre for
undergrad/postgrads unfamiliar with Linux and GEANT4.
