You need to change your shell to the c-shell.  You can do this simply by
typing: 

csh

If you want to make this change permanent (you don't have to change to
the c-shell every time you open a new window and want to run GATE), you
have to become root (type "su" and enter root's password), type 

chsh <username>

where <username> is replaced by your username.  You will then see:

Changing the login shell for <username>
Enter the new value, or press return for the default
        Login Shell [/bin/bash]: 

and you want to type in

/bin/csh

So it will look like this:
Changing the login shell for <username>
Enter the new value, or press return for the default
        Login Shell [/bin/bash]: /bin/csh

then the change will be permanent.
