Hi all,

In our team we deployed Gate on 2 different clusters. Both Linux, one with Fedora and Ubuntu for the second, and both with the Condor cluster utility.

The Fedora distribution is changing every 6 months, so if you want to always have an up-to-date system it is not recommended, because it is very annoying when you have to reinstall everything on multiple machine...
The Ubuntu community produces some LTS (Long Time Support) distributions that permit you to keep your system up-to-date for at least 2 years (to be verified), and it is pretty easy at the end of this period to upgrade your installation to the new one without having to reinstall all stuff.
We have no experience at all with Scientific linux.

I think that your choice is strickly dependent on what you want to do with your machines. Do you plan to use its for other things than just running Gate on it ? Do you want to run other programs that need to follow the gcc evolution for example ? And what clustering utility do you want to use ?

Concerning this point, we always used and use Condor. It is pretty easy to install and configure if you have few Linux and Network knowledge. It allows to do a lot of things (from basic to very twisted). And the Cluster_Tools from GATE totally support Condor. The Condor team distributes either some binaries for few distributions that are very easy to install (then you have to configure few things as I said), or the source code if you don't find yours.

When we installed Condor on Fedora, there were Fedora binaries, but now there aren't anymore...
And for Ubuntu, we take (as advised in condor forums) the RedHat enterprise binaries that are still working well !

Hope these informations could be useful,
Cheers,
Simon

On Thu, Jan 29, 2009 at 11:56 AM, David Sharpe <das74@wbic.cam.ac.uk> wrote:

I can't offer any advice - but I am in a similiar situation and would be interested in which road you choose to go down.

We already use GridEngine here so I am tempted to implement it over that - there is some code kindly contributed somewhere which supports it.
Thanks,
Hello all

We are about to deploy a cluster. Does anyone have any advice on what
configuration will work best (or work at all)?
Which Linux distribution to use (and which to avoid), which version of
Gate, or any advice that will help us "jump start" the system will be
greatly appreciated. At present, I am running a single workstation
installation using Gate 4.0.0 on Scientific Linux.

Many thanks

Alan
